Fabric Glossary: Terms Starting with Z
Z Twist
Z Twist refers to the direction in which yarn is twisted, also known as right-hand twist. The opposite direction is called S Twist or left-hand twist. To avoid confusion with the terms "left twist" and "right twist," the letters S and Z are used for simplification.
Zibeline
Zibeline is a heavy fabric with a twill weave that closely resembles Mikado fabric. It can be made from various fibers, including silk, wool, and blends with synthetics like polyester. Traditionally, zibeline was a heavy coating or cape fabric made from blends such as wool with mohair or alpaca. Today, zibeline is popular for dresses, formal wear, and wedding gowns.
